The School of Mashabi

The Late Mashabi was and is Melayu singer par exellence. As written by Adi Karso, a composer who direct Kelana Ria Orchestra, Mashabi was a permanent singer for Kelana Ria Orchestra. This group got their popularity thru albums Kafilah, Ya Mahmud, and Yam el Shamah. The memorable songs of Kelana Ria were Ya Mustafa, Gelang Si Paku Gelang, Ratapan Anak Tiri, and Renungkanlah. Most of those songs were interpretated by Mashabi.

This LP album Yam el Shamah is supposed to be the third album of Kelana Ria which directed by Adimunif. Mashabi was not only a singer. He played mandoline and composed some songs, two of them were Renungkanlah, and Pantun Nasehat. The genre of his songs is Melayu, in the term of the so-called dangdut. If we try to find out who is the father of Melayu music, Mashabi is the one who fits that label. *
